From St barths to Sardinia - 2011 superyacht regatta Season
June 2011
It all started in St Barths, then onto the British Virgin Islands and most recently Porto Cervo on the northern coast of Sardinia. The 2011 superyacht regatta season has seen a number of Fitzroy built yachts involved. The yacht's owners, guests and crews have enjoyed 4 great international regattas so far, on and off the water.
Moonbird (winner 2007 / runner up 2009 Dubois Cup) was our only boat competing at St Barths this year and was then joined by Zefira in the British Virgin Islands for Boat International Media's inaugural 'Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous'.
Zefira's next event in her debut regatta season was the Dubois Cup where she finished 3rd overall on handicap having been the fastest yacht around the course in the shortened single race program due to light winds on the first day.
At the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta she placed 6th overall in the cruising division after an 8th placing on the first day and a 7th placing on the Fitzroy Yachts race day. Because of the high winds gusting to above 30 knots the racing was called off on days 2 and 4 of the regatta so a shortened race program eventuated.
Fitzroy Yachts is a proud gold sponsor of both the Dubois Cup and the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.

Zefira set for more international awards
June 2011
Fitzroy Yachts are proud to announce that Zefira is a finalist in all four categories she was nominated for in the 2011 ShowBoats Design Awards.
Having received more than 250 nominations for the second annual ShowBoats Design Awards, Boat International Media’s senior editors were faced with the challenge of reducing this impressive list of entries to a shortlist of outstanding finalists. With such quality and innovation of design found amongst the nominees, this was no easy task.
After much consideration, 59 exceptional finalists are now in contention to receive a coveted golden Neptune at the gala awards evening, to be held in Palm Beach, Florida, on October 25.
Zefira is a finalist in the following categories:
1. Interior design award - Sailing yacht
2. Exterior design and styling award - Sailing yacht

Zefira - 2011 World Superyacht Awards Finalist
JANUARY 2011
Boat International Media’s senior editors have whittled down over 100 nominations to an outstanding list of 62 finalists who are in contention to receive a coveted Neptune Trophy.
To be shortlisted as a Finalist at the World Superyacht Awards is an achievement in itself. Zefira is competing with 6 other finalists for the best sailing yacht 45 metres plus category.
An independent jury comprised of 14 superyacht owners will meet in March at Porto Montenegro, located at Tivat in the picturesque Bay of Kotor, to decide which yachts will receive a prized Neptune Award in 2011.

Salperton Wins Showboats design award
October 2010
The Fitzroy Yachts built superyacht Salperton IV is on top of the world after collecting the ShowBoats Design award for Exterior Design and Styling.
The inaugural ShowBoats Design Awards 2010 took place last night (26 October) at the exclusive Mar A Lago Club, Donald Trump’s private members club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Following a two-day Superyacht Design Symposium, 350 guests gathered for an evening of cocktails, a gala dinner and Awards ceremony honoring the Superyacht industry’s creative talents; the architects, designers, stylists, craftsmen, and innovators in yacht technologies.
ShowBoats Design Awards evolved from the design-focused awards previously a part of the Boat International Media World Superyacht Awards, as well as introducing a number of new categories. The jury was compromised four superyacht owners – specifically chosen for their interest in design issues – two naval architects, a senior yacht captain, an experienced yacht chef, and six design professionals with no links to the superyacht industry. With more than 200 nominations, it was an incredibly tough task for the experienced panel.
The Award: Exterior Design and Styling Award
Awarded to the designers of a sailing yacht considered to be the most inspiring and practical, while providing the features demanded by the owner. The quality of the design, its compatibility with the interior of the yacht, its seagoing functionality, innovative features and its impact on the ability of the crew to perform their duties will be considered by the judges.

Fitzroy Yachts expertise sought after by significant European buyer for 50 metre Flybridge
September 2010
Fitzroy Yachts reputation for excellence and ease of doing business has attracted a key European client and sealed a major new yacht build for the New Zealand-based yacht maker.
Fitzroy Yachts start work this month on G50, a 50-metre Flybridge Sloop that will be ready for delivery in 2012.
The European owner approached Fitzroy directly to build his latest sailing yacht.
“It’s especially pleasing to have the client dealing with us exclusively and recognising our reputation for the care and quality we put into our relationships and of course our yachts” said Rodney Martin, Fitzroy Yachts Managing Director.
“We compete with companies often located close to the customer, so it’s credit to our New Zealand team that we’re known for being good to deal with and securing this deal when new-builds are scarce,” he added.
Fitzroy Yachts commissioned Dubois Naval Architects to design G50, with interior design and styling by the owner. Fitzroy have collaborated with Dubois on many of their boats including the international award-nominated 45m Salperton IV, and the about to be launched 50metre Zefira.
“We’re proud of each of the superyachts we have built over the past 13 years. G50 will be another opportunity to continue pushing the limits of luxury, sailing systems and engineering to make our client’s dream sailing yacht a reality.”
Martin is currently in discussions about other new yacht builds. The New Zealand based team will be showcasing Fitzroy during the year at all the major superyacht Regattas and at the Monaco Boat Show, in September, their 2009 launch, SalpertonIV, will be on show.

SOLO Trans-Tasman Yacht Race Record
Stands Unbroken
APRIL 2010
When Bruce Arms sailed his 14m catamaran, Big Wave Rider, from Queensland to New Plymouth in six days and five hours, taking almost four hours off the existing 24 year old Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Race record, some people thought he had it sewn up.
Arms, who lives aboard with wide Suzanne, built the five tonne yacht in time for the 2007 singlehanded Tasman race, but had added 5m2 area to the mainsail and taken 500kg of cruising gear (including the dining table) out of her to help crack the record.
And so he should - but light airs and contrary weather foiled Arms race against the clock and he crept across the finish line off Mooloolaba at 7:34pm(NZST) almost 24 hours outside the record. The 49 year old boatbuilder bested his 2007 race time of 7d10h57m but his race finished in similar conditions to the way it started and he ghosted across the finish line amidst rain showers and thunder. His elapsed time was 7d 6h34m.
The former Waitara man is now Mooloolaba based - he sailed the 1998 singlehanded Tasman yacht race and stayed on in Australia afterwards. A large crowd of locals gathered to cheer the popular skipper and his lilac coloured yacht across the line.
