Fitzroy Yachts Take The Honours in Porto Cervo - Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

June 2010

Two Fitzroy Yachts took line honours in last week's Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.

During good sailing conditions on the final day of racing, the 39m Fitzroy Yachts-built Ed Dubois-designed Ganesha charged towards the line scoring their second win in the Cruising Class and the overall prize.

As overall winner, the owner of Ganesha was presented with the Loro Piana Prize Overall - The Silver Jubilee Cup by Boat International and a stunning Chihuly artpiece.

Second place was also claimed by a Fitzroy-built Dubois design – the 37m Moonbird on which America’s Cup sailor Chris Main is racing skipper.

Video and photos of the event are available to view on the Regatta Website www.loropianasuperyachtregatta.com

Organisers say the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta is scheduled to take place again in early June 2011. You can expect Fitzroy built yachts to be back in force and winning form.

Fitzroy Yachts expertise sought after by significant European buyer for 50 metere Flybridge

June 2010

Fitzroy Yachts reputation for excellence and ease of doing business, has attracted a key European client and sealed a major new yacht build for the New Zealand-based yacht maker.

Fitzroy Yachts start work this month on Project G50, a 50-metre Flybridge Sloop, that will be ready for delivery in 2012.

The G50’s European owner approached Fitzroy directly to build his latest sailing yacht.

“It’s especially pleasing to have the client dealing with us exclusively and recognising  our reputation for the care and quality we put into our relationships and of course our yachts.” said Rodney Martin, Fitzroy Yachts Managing Director.

“We compete with companies often located close to the customer, so it’s credit to our New Zealand  team that we’re known for being good to deal with and securing this deal when new-builds are scarce,” he added.

Fitzroy Yachts commissioned Dubois Naval Architects to design G50, with interior design and styling by the owner. Fitzroy have collaborated with Dubois on many of their boats including the international award-nominated 45m Salperton IV, and the about to be launched 50metre Zefira.

“We’re proud of each of the superyachts we have built over the past 13 years. G50 will be another step as we add even more innovative features and make our client’s dream sailing yacht a reality.”

Martin is currently in discussions about other new yacht builds. The New Zealand based team will be showcasing Fitzroy during the year at all the major superyacht Regattas and at the Monaco Boat Show, in September, their 2009 launch, SalpertonIV, will be on show.

SOLO Trans-Tasman Yacht Race Record
Stands Unbroken

APRIL 2010

When Bruce Arms sailed his 14m catamaran, Big Wave Rider, from Queensland to New Plymouth in six days and five hours, taking almost four hours off the existing 24 year old Solo Trans-Tasman Yacht Race record, some people thought he had it sewn up.

Arms, who lives aboard with wide Suzanne, built the five tonne yacht in time for the 2007 singlehanded Tasman race, but had added 5m2 area to the mainsail and taken 500kg of cruising gear (including the dining table) out of her to help crack the record.

And so he should - but light airs and contrary weather foiled Arms race against the clock and he crept across the finish line off Mooloolaba at 7:34pm(NZST) almost 24 hours outside the record. The 49 year old boatbuilder bested his 2007 race time of 7d10h57m but his race finished in similar conditions to the way it started and he ghosted across the finish line amidst rain showers and thunder. His elapsed time was 7d 6h34m.

The former Waitara man is now Mooloolaba based - he sailed the 1998 singlehanded Tasman yacht race and stayed on in Australia afterwards. A large crowd of locals gathered to cheer the popular skipper and his lilac coloured yacht across the line.

Fitzroy extending its superyacht interests

Sept 2009

New Zealand superyacht builder Fitzroy Yachts is expanding its interest in luxury boats by an investment in a new company aimed at the top end of the motor yacht market.

Whangarei based Culham Engineering, Donovan Group, SMI (Specialty Marine Interiors) along with backers including Fitzroy Yachts chairman Peter White-Robinson have joined forces to form Fitzroy Motor Yachts.

The move brings together Whangarei’s reputation for engineering expertise, the city’s long history of boatbuilding under the umbrella of the established Fitzroy Yachts brand.

The new venture will be launched on the world superyacht market later this month with a presence in the principality of Monaco followed by an exhibit at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in October.

Rodney Martin, Fitzroy Yachts managing director said that extending the brand into motor yachts made good sense. “Our reputation for precision and excellence is matched by the experience and attitude of the Whangarei based consortium.”

Since building its first large, luxury yacht in 1997 Fitzroy Yachts has built 11 high specification vessels, seven of them superyachts over 30 metres long.

Last year the New Plymouth built Salperton III was judged best sailing yacht in the 30 – 55 m class at the Monaco Yacht Show. The latest yacht, Salperton IV was launched June this year and is currenlty on its maden voyage in the Pacific Ocean.

The skill of the yacht builder is to take the most intricate of designs and complex technologies and fit them precisely and perfectly into a restricted space.

In this particular case, 12 square metres.

Fitzroy Yachts is a recognised and trusted company, with a refreshed brand image, and new energy, and we are exhibiting at both the Monaco Boat Show and the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
